In the limonene extraction lab from orange peels, how do we know that there is only limonene and water in the receiving container after the steam distillation?
Isn't there any other components in the orange rinds?
Orange peel consist of around 93-94% lomonene.
Other monor compounds that present in peels are Myrcene( ~ 2%), Octanal, Linalool etc.
So after distillation one will have only water and Limonene in the reciever as this is only major part of peels.
One can record GC, LCMS or 1H NMR to confirm this.
Second part of your question-
As i mentioned earliar, limonene is major constituent, some other minor component like Mycrene, linallool, octanal, decanal are presents.
Hope this will help you. write me in comment for any other querry.
