In the limonene extraction lab from orange peels, how do we know that there is only limonene and water in the receiving container after the steam distillation?

Isn't there any other components in the orange rinds?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Orange peel consist of around 93-94% lomonene.

Other monor compounds that present in peels are Myrcene( ~ 2%), Octanal, Linalool etc.

So after distillation one will have only water and Limonene in the reciever as this is only major part of peels.

One can record GC, LCMS or 1H NMR to confirm this.

Second part of your question-

As i mentioned earliar, limonene is major constituent, some other minor component like Mycrene, linallool, octanal, decanal are presents.

Hope this will help you. write me in comment for any other querry.

(OChem) In a Limonene isolation lab (from orange peels), we performed the steam distillation and measured the temperature corresponding to the distillate volume. In (R)-limonene isolation lab (from oranges), we observed the rotation of (R)-limonene. 1) If a little amount of water is mixed with limonene in the sample, how would the presence of water affect %ee(enantiomeric excess) determined for the isolated limonene? 2) What is the effect of a small amount of (S)-limonene to the experimental enantiomeric excess determined for the isolated (R)-limonene? 3) Would the same mass of water vs. (S)-limonene impurity have the same magnitude effect of the experimental enantiomeric...

In organic lab, we did a steam distillation of the essential oil of caraway oil. In the post questions it asks for some calculation I don't understand how to get. First ---> calculate the percent of essential oil based on the mass of caraway oil used (caraway oil used was 2.038 grams) Second ----> assuming the reaction is quantitative, the amount of carvone originally in the extracted oil can be calculated. The amount of limonene in the oil can then...

The following questions refers to the synthesis of methylcyclohexenes from 2-methylcyclohexanol: Q.1) Why do we only use simple distillation?? Answer: I think it's something regarding Le's Chatelier's principle, i.e, to move the equilibrium of the reaction to the right side of the reaction formula. Is this correct? Or is there more to this? Q.2) Why do we use gc and gcmas, instead of nmr? Answer: because gc and gcmas gives the ratio of the various isomeric products, i.e gives their...

I’m working on a lab that has to do with the Atwood Machine. We collected data in separate tables for constant total mass and constant total force. The knowns for me are the two masses, experimental and theoretical acceleration. I’m having difficulties figuring out how to apply the information I have now to get Tension and then from there, finding FNet. Any suggestions?

Define rate of change. Do you know any data from which we can clearly figure out the rate of change? For example, if we examine the data for the size of an apartment and its monthly rent in the City, can we calculate the rate of change, i.e., how much we pay per square foot?

In a lab, we were supposed to calculate the pKa of KHP by titrating with NaOH and building a curve with that data. I calibrated my pH meter via taking mV readings in buffers at pH= 2, 4, 7, and 10. I got a linear regression that had an R^2 of >.999 so I feel pretty good about that. I fixed my pH meter in the soln and made a curve. When I reached the endpoint, I found the inflection...

SETUP In today’s lab we will measure specific heat using a calorimeter. A calorimeter consist of a small metal cup inside a larger metal container, with a lid.  The cups are thermally separated from each other by means of air and a wooden ring, thus reducing the thermal conduction to a minimum. To keep track of how much water etc. we have, the whole calorimeter will be placed on a digital scale. Make sure to zero the scale before you place...

Lab 5 Queries with Multiple Tables In this lab, we do queries more than one table. SQL provides two different techniques for querying data from multiple tables: • The SQL subquery • The SQL join As you will learn, although both work with multiple tables, they are used for slightly different purposes. We used WMCRM database which is what we created in Lab 4. Here is the summary of the database schema (where schema is used in its meaning of...
