Why might KMnO4 not produce 2-methylcyclohexanone in good yield?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

KMnO4 is not considered for the conversions of secondary alcohols to ketones.

Secondary alcohols get oxidized under mild oxidizing to undergo dehydration to form ketone with same number of carbon atoms. However, KMnO4 a strong oxidizing agent is not considered for the conversions of secondary alcohols to ketones. Because on prolonged treatment with the reagent further oxidation may take place further and the ketone may form carboxylic acid with one carbon atom less than the ketone.

Thus, KMnO4 does not produce 2-methylcyclohexanone in good yield.
