Doing a lab where Mg is mixed with HCL in a eudiometer which produces H2 gas.
Not sure why the pressure in eudiometer is less than atmospheric..any help would be great.
Question:
At the end of the gas collection, the pressure of hydrogen in the eudiometer will be less than atmospheric pressure? Explain why.
A eudiometer is a fancy name for a simple setup as shown in the diagram. Note that as depicted the pressure of gas in the tube is LESS than atmospheric pressure. It is only when level of water inside the column is equal to the level OUTSIDE that the pressures are equal i.e.
Patmospheric=Pgas+Psaturated vapour pressure.
Psvp=vapour pressure of water, a constant at constant temperature.
So,
Pgas = Patmospheric - Psvp
Thus pressure of gas is less than atmospheric pressure.
