LLE is often performed to separate an organic product from a reaction mixture. Diethyl ether is used in this oxidation reaction. Why is more thanone extraction of the aqueous layer required? Explain on a microscopic level.

Answer #1

Hi there,

LLE (Liquid-Liquid Extraction) technique is based on partition coefficient or distribution coefficient KD which is defined as the ratio of solubilities in the two solvents. This is an equilibrium process governed by the solubilities of the substance in the two phases.

KD = Corganic / Caqueous where C = concentration of solute

Hence multiple extractions are more efficient than a single extraction with the same volume of solvent as each time there will be an equilibrium exists between two immiscible solvents, so that we get maximum product yield.

Hope this helped you!

You will use a simple distillation to isolate the product mixture in the dehydration reaction. Then you will separate the water from the alkene products by extraction using ether as your extraction solvent, dry the ether, and evaporate the ether to prepare your alkene mixture for analysis. Would it be useful at this point to do a second simple distillation to try to isolate each of the alkene products before analysis so that you can analyze each product separately rather...

First, you used the 1:1 diethyl ether/petroleum ether mixture; then switches to pure petroleum ether after the first colored band is collected. a) Which (ferrocene or acetylferrocene) would elute first? Explain b) Does it take more, less, or about the same amount of this “wrong solvent” to elute the ferrocene (as compared to using pure petroleum ether as instructed)?
