How many grams of nickel metal are plated out when a constant current of 15.0 A is passed through aqueous NiCl2 for 60.0 minutes?

Stuff you need: Ni+2 needs two moles of e- to form 1 mole of Ni metal; 1 A = 1 Coulomb/sec; 1 mol e- = 96,485 C.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Current (A) = 15 A

time (t) = 60 min = 60 x 60 = 3600sec

Faraday (F) = 96485 C

Ni atomic weight = 58.69 g / mol

Ni equivalent weight (E) = 58.69 / charge

                                     = 58.69 /2

                                      = 29.34

from faraday's law

w = E x i x t / 96485

w = 29.34 x 15 x 3600 / 96485

w = 16.09 g

weight of Ni metal = 16.09 g

1. Nickel, a common metal used in a variety of alloys, is purified via the Mond process to a very high (> 99.99%) purity. One of the steps in the Mond process involves the reaction of solid nickel with carbon monoxide to produce Ni(CO)4, as shown in the unbalanced equation below. Chemical Reactions Types and Their Equations Making Heat with Chemical Reactions Have you ever wondered how an instant heat pack works? A disposable heat pack works by a chemical reaction that combines iron in the package with oxygen from the air when the outer packaging is removed producing iron oxide. You have probably seen the product of this reaction in what is commonly called rust. The reaction releases heat, which allows the pack to reach a sufficient temperature that is...
