A)A reaction is observed in which there are more products at the time of observation than when it is at equilibrium. Using mathematical relationships, what can you predict about the spontaneity of the reaction in the foward direction?

B) A reaction is quite spontaneous even at very high temperatures. Discuss the most likely values dor Delta S Delta H and Delta G at 25 C

C) What can you predict about the standard Gibbs free energy change for a product favor reaction.

Answer #1

A) DG should be negative in the forward direction

we know that DG = DH - T*DS

   When     DH = -ve(exothermic) , DS = +ve (entropy increses) then the forward rection is spontaneous.

                DH = +ve(endothermic) , DS = +ve (entropy increses) and T = high then the forward rection is spontaneous.

B)

we know that DG = DH - T*DS

DG = -Ve(spontaneity)

when

DH = -ve(exothermic) , DS = +ve (entropy increses) then the rection is spontaneous.

DH = +ve(endothermic) , DS = +ve (entropy increses) and T = high then the rection is spontaneous.

C) DG = -ve

Which of the following statements about spontaneity are true? A decrease in the entropy of the reaction ensures that only reactants will be formed during the course of a reaction. A reaction with an increase in enthalpy and entropy will be spontaneous at all temperatures. A reaction with a negative value for ΔGnonstand will result in only products being present at the end of the reaction. The enthalpy change in a reaction can be used to predict if a reaction...

Consider the relevant thermodynamic data from the appendices of your text. (The tabulated values ΔH°f and S° are for 25°C. For the purposes of this question assume that ΔH° and ΔS° are invariant with temperature. This is not actually true but would generally be a reasonable approximation over "small" temperature ranges.) Gibbs Free Energy: Equilibrium Constant Nitric oxide, NO, also known as nitrogen monoxide, is one of the primary contributors to air pollution, acid rain, and the depletion of the ozone layer. The reaction of oxygen and nitrogen to form nitric oxide in an automobile engine is N2(g)+O2(g)?2NO(g) The spontaneity of a reaction can be determined from the free energy change for the reaction, ?G?. A reaction is spontaneous when the free energy change is less than zero. A reaction...

Scientists and conservationists are concerned that, due to new and growing threats, particularly associated with climate change, many species may soon be unable to persist in the habitats in which they currently occur. This has caused some to argue in favor of "assisted migration", whereby individuals of a species are moved from their native habitat into a new location that is highly suitable for them, but in which they had not previously been present. For example, the white lemuroid ringtail...

A knotty problem Nice Wood Products is a small but successful Pacific Coast firm that produces standard types and grades of lumber for the domestic construction industry. This includes 2x4s and 2x6s used in framing as well as plywood and particle board. Fewer houses are being built and it is likely that for the immediate future, there is going...
