The total annual load of total phosphorus for the same year was estimated to be 107,000 metric tons (as P).

a. Calculate the average concentration of total P (in mg/L).

b. Calculate the average daily flux of total P (kg/day)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a) The average concentrataion of P = mass of P loaded /Volume of river basin

= (107000 metric tons per year) / (19900 m3/s)

= (1.07 x 108 kg/year) / (19900 x1000 L/s)

=(1.07 x 108 kg/year) / ((19900 x1000 L/s)x24 x 3600 s/day x 365 day /year )

= 0.406 x 10-5 kg/L

= 0.406 x 10-2 g/L

= 0.406 x 101 mg/L

= 4.06 mg/L

Convert any one into single unit like in year or second. Here we converted denominator from seconds to year.

(B)

Here we know flux of Nitrogen in metrric tons per year , we need to convert this into kg/day.

Flux of N in kg/day == 107000 metric tons per year

= 107000 x 103 kg / year

1 year = 365 days

= 107000 x 103 kg / 365 days

= 293150.7 kg/day

A wastewater treatment plant discharges total phosphorus in its effluent throughout the year into a nearby river. The treatment plant produces flows of 6 MGD with a total phosphorus concentration of 4.0 mg/L. The receiving river has an upstream flow of 200 ft3/sec and a background concentration of total phosphorus of 0.3 mg/L. Determine the concentration (in mg/L) of total phosphorus in the river at a point downstream of the effluent location.
