Draw structural formulas for 1-bromobutane, 2-bromobutane, 2-bromo-2-methylpropane, 1-bromo-2-methylpropane, and 1-bromo-2,2-dimethylpropane. Classify each compound as a primary halide, secondary halide, or tertiary halide.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The structural formulae and the classification are as shown.

Note:

In primary halide, the halogen atom is bonded to a primary carbon atom. A primary carbon atom is attached to only one other carbon atom.

In secondary halide, the halogen atom is bonded to a secondary carbon atom. A secondary carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms.

In tertiary halide, the halogen atom is bonded to a tertiary carbon atom. A tertiary carbon atom is attached to three other carbon atoms.
