Ammonia can be produced from its constituent elements (i.e., the elements that are present in the molecule). A very famous scientist discovered this scientific method. Answer the following questions with respect to the production of ammonia.

Write the balanced thermochemical reaction for the production of ammonia (You will need to include the exact values for temperature, pressure, and ∆H). 3 points. [check a text book to see how temperature, pressure, and ΔH is shown in a chemical equation]. (You must cite a reference source).

Answer #1

Ammonia is prepared by using Haber process from their constituents elements Nitrogen and Hydrogen.

The balanced equatio is   N2(g) + 3 H2(g) -------------------- 2 NH3(g)          H = - 92.0 KJ/mole

The formation of Ammonia is exothermic reaction. During this reaction 92.0 KJ amount of energy is released.

According to Lechatelier principle, the following conditions are favourable for getting the high yield of Ammonia.

a) 1:3 by volume of N2 and H2. [ 1 part of N2 and 3 parts of H2 ]

b) High pressure is applied, because in the forwoird direction number of moles of decreased [ 1+3 -------------2]

Hence the pressure 200 atm is used.

c) An intermediate Temperature 400-450C is used.

d) Iron is used as catalyst and Molybdenum (Mo) is used as catalyst.
