What is the pecursor for making PAN carbob fibers?
Carbon fibers are made from carbon filament which is produced from a polymer like polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rayon, or petroleum derived pitch. These sources are called as a precursor for carbon fiber. First step is to spun the precursor into filament yarns, using chemical and mechanical processes. Among these PAN is a versatile polymer used to produce large variety of products. Towards this, PAN is first thermally oxidized in air at ~230 oC to form an oxidized PAN fiber and then carbonized above ~1000 oC in inert atmosphere to make carbon fibers which is suitable for making of high-tech and common daily applications.
