What was the purpose of doing base extractions during an experiment?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans:

During an experiment if the products of a reaction are both of same nature, lets say both are organic compounds and ether soluble and both are water insoluble and if one of is an organic acid,it can be changed to water soluble by reacting with a base. And this acidic organic compound on reacting with base becomes water soluble compound and can be separated or extracted form the mixture.

The solubilities of acidic and basic compounds can thus be changed at will.

Once the layers are separated as before, the neutral acid or base can be regenerated by yet another acid-base reaction

The following question is regarding an experiment converting 1-bromobutane from 1-butanol. We performed three extractions (separatory funnels) during this First: H20 and 1-bromobutane Second: 1 bromobutane and H2SO4 (cold) Third: Potassium carbonate and 1-bromobutane Here is the question The organic layer can also be extracted with NaOH (aq) instead of using potassium carbonate. However, sometimes, initially two layers form in the separatory funnel when the base is first added to the organic layer. But during extraction, the solution has been...
