TLC is a very good and cheapest technique for monitoring progress of reaction. For this, starting materials and reaction mixture are spotted aon TLC and then allowed to run in an appropriate solvent system and then it is visualized in UV lamp or by developing in Iodine. Formation new spot in addition to starting material suggests that reaction is going. Same process is reapeted at different time interval till there is complete disappearance of starting matetial.
