Identify the intermolecular forces holding the following molecules together in the solid state: CH3NH2 F2 NOF CH3COH C2H6 H2O and rank the molecules in order of increasing boiling point. Justify your answer.

Answer #1

In CH3NH2 we have polar bonds and Hydrogen bonding is possible

Hence major intermolecular forces are ydrogen bonding

In F2   which is non polar major intermolecular force is vander waals force or london dispersion forces

NOF is polar and hence major intermolcular forces are dipole-dipole attractions

C2H6 is non polar , hence major intermoclcular forces are london dispersion forces

H2O is polar and will exhibit hydrogen bonding since H is attached to high electronegative element O.

Hence major intermolecular force is Hydrogen bonding
