Answer #1

The oxidation state of sulfur in Na?SO? is + 6; the oxidation state of sulfur in Na?S is -2. A material is reduced when it's oxidation state goes down, so sulfur is reduced is the reaction. Each carbon goes from a state of 0 (free elements are 0) to a state of +2 .

Since there is only one sulfur and it experiences a +6 to -2 change - it gains 8 electrons. The 4 carbon atoms go from a charge of 0 to (4 x +2 = +8) - they lose the 8 electrons gained by the sulfur.
