During detection of fuctiona group, it is advisable to carry out a blank test by adding all reagents except the unknown compond so that there will be no misleading reults/

Tollen's reagent consist of silverammonium complex solution. Aldehyde gives grey ppt or silver mirror with Tollens reagent,.

RCHO + 2 [ Ag (NH3)4]OH RCOONH4 + 3NH3 + H2O + 2Ag

We are dissolving the unknown sample in alcohol and then doing Tollens reagent test.

Solvent alcohol can contain some aldehyde as impurities. So a blank test should be performed with alcohol solvent and Tollen' reagent. If no grey ppt or silver mirror is obtained then Tollen's reagent can be applied to alcoholic solution of the unknown sample to check whether the unknown sample is containing any aldehyde group or not.

In this way for tollen's test. chemical blank can be perfoprmed.
