How many grams of sodium hydroxide would be required to produce 10.0 g of sodium stearate (NaC18H35O2)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

From formula of sodium stearate it is clear that , one mole sodium hydroxide produces one mole sodium stearate.

First calculate molar mass of sodium stearate

Molar mass of NaC18H35O2 = 23 + ( 18 x 12 ) + ( 35 x 1) + ( 2 x 16 ) = 306 gm / mol

Molar mass of NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40 gm / mol

1 mole NaC18H35O2 1 mole of NaOH

306 gm NaC18H35O2 40 gm NaOH

10 gm  NaC18H35O2 40 gm x 10 gm / 306 gm

1.307 gm NaOH

ANSWER : 1.307 gm NaOH will be required to produce 10 gm  NaC18H35O2 .
