You are attempting to build a galvanic cell using the reaction: Cu2+ + 2 e- ---> Cu is one of your half cells. Using only the reactions on the equation sheet (attached), what is the maximum cell potential you could produce with your galvanic cell at standard conditions?

(a) 4.23 V

(b) 2.53 V

(c) 2.87 V

(d) 3.05 V

(e) 3.39 V

Answer #1

The maxium cell potential is obtained only when the other half cell is lithium which it has least reduction potential which it is -3.045

therefore

standard cll potentail = reduction potential of copper - reduction potential of lithium

                                    = 0.337 - (-3.045)

                                    = 3.39 V
