explain the connection between metabolism, free radicals, and vitamins.
Aerobic metabolism entails the generation of reactive oxygen species. These include the superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, the hydroxyl radical, and singlet molecular oxygen. Free radicals are atoms or molecules with a single electron. These atoms can react or pair with any molecules inorder to replace the lost ones (electrons). Suppose in our cellular system if these radicals are formed, this will lead to disruption in the function of the cells. Then they can mess up with our system by taking a electron from some of our important functional molecules. Antioxidants are reducing agents which prevents the oxidation of the molecules (free radical formation) and their they neutralize the amount of free radicals present in the cell. Vitamins and minerals are largely found to be antioxidants which can be obtained from the herbs, vegetables and fruits.
