(a) What advantages does CZE have over GC or HPLC?

(b) What types of species can be separated by CZE, but not HPLC or GC?

(c) What are three common detectors for CZE?

Answer #1

(a). Capillary Zone Electrophoresis also known as CZE has advantages over GC and HPLC.

in CZE,we use capillary tubes, by using capillary tubes, there is decrement in lateral diffusion effects and so temperature differences across the tube get reduced . ... these narrow capillaries also helps to reduce band-broadening where as in hplc and gc,there is very broadening in bands. so we prefer CZE over HPLC and GC. also seperation efficiency of CZE is 60-100 times greater than HPLC and GC.

(c) 1. UV absorbance detector

2. fluoroscence detector

3. photosensitive detector
