After the manganese (II) ion is precipitated as manganese (II) hydroxide in mixture B, the precipitate is washed with 6M NaOH(aq) solution and then with water. Why is this washing performed, and what exactly is being washed away?
A:- Balanced equation, Mg^2+(aq) + 2 OH^-(aq) ------> Mg(OH)2(s)
Washing with NaOH:
If any unreactive Mg^2+ ions remains in the precipitate, which is completely converted to Mg(OH)2 by washing with NaOH.
Washing with water:
If any unreacted hydroxide ion in the mixture, which is completely dissolved in water. so by washing with water the unreactive hydroxide ions are removed.
