What are three reactions of the alkene, isobutylene? It can be a reactant or a product. Please show the mechanism by using arrows for electron movment and label the name of the reaction.

Answer #1

I have shown 3 reactions of isobutylene as a reactant, in the pictures attached please have a look....

The first reaction is the polymerisation reaction of isobutylene which yields polyisobutylene also called as vinyl rubber.

The second reaction is action of strong acid HCl on isobutylene which forms 1 chloro 2, 2 dimethyl ethane

The third reaction shows acid catalysed hydration of isobutylene that yields tertiary butyl alcohol as the major product.

A. Name at least two experimental parameters that can affect the determination of the boiling point when performing a distillation. State how to optimize those two parameters so that you can get the correct boiling point. The solvent used can affect the rates of SN1 reactions. B.What common protic solvents are used for these types of reactions? Explain why the rates of SN1 reactions are faster in polar, protic solvents than in polar, aprotic solvents. C. When 1-iodo-1-methylcyclohexane is treated with NaOCH2CH3 as the base, the more highly substituted alkene product predominates. When KOC(CH3)3 is used as the base, the less highly substituted alkene predominates. Give the structures of the two products and offer an explanation. The major product which results when 2-chloropentane is heated in sodium iodide is an ether. Show and name the mechanism by which this ether forms.

Osmium tetroxide can be used to oxidize an alkene to a syn-glycol. A similar process for the reaction can happen by using potassium permanganate. Draw the osmate ester as well as the resulting ester from using potassium permanganate. The opposite of a syn-addition is an anti-addition. There are ways to produce an anti-glycol instead of a syn-glycol. Look up a way to do this. Write out the general reaction (reactant, reagents, products).
