5. Explain, in detail, what you would do to determine the actual composition of the clove oil sample. Assume you have access to standard lab equipment, and pure samples of eugenol, beta-caryophyllene, and eugenyl acetate. Answers that don’t use a GC will receive no credit.

5. To determine actual composition of clove oil.

Prepare standard samples of eugenol, beta-carophyllene and eugenyl acetate.

Inject into GC. Drawn calibration plots for the standard samples.

Now take the clove oil sample and dilute it with proper solvent.

Inject the aliquot into Gc and calculate the position and area of the peaks.

Compare it with the calibration plots for the three compounds and extimate the exact composition of the three components in the clove oil sample.
