The absorbance of a 0.18 M colored solution was measured with red light and found to be 0.281. If the same curvette was cleaned, used, and dried what would you predict the absorbance to be for each of the following solution concentration?

a. 0.27 M solution

b. 0.36 M solution

c. 0.90 M solution

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We know according to Beer-Lambert law, absorbance A = CL

From given values: 0.281=   0.18 L

=> --------------------(1)

Now solving equation A= for

(a) 0.27 M:    A= 0.27

Substituting value of from above equation (1)

A= 0.2810.27/0.18 = 0.421

Now solving equation A= for

(b) 0.36 M: A= 0.36

Substituting value of from above equation (1)

A= 0.2810.36/0.18 = 0.562

Again solving equation A= for

(b) 0.90 M: A= 0.90

Substituting value of from above equation (1)

A= 0.2810.90/0.18 = 1.405

During the spectrophotometric analysis of an unknown, the absorbance of a solution of unknown concentration is measured, and the value is higher than the highest standard used to make the standard curve. What should be done to make sure that the standard curve can be used to determine the concentration of the unknown? A) Dilute the unknown so that it will have an absorbance within the standard curve. Once the diluted unknown concentration is determined, the full strength concentration can...

A UV/vis light absorbance spectrophotometer produced the following linear calibration equation for a given standard, A=0.653C+0.0342 where C is the molar concentration and A is the absorbance. The detector's lifetime was running out, so the lab manager replaced the detector. Before the lab manager properly aligned the detector and diffraction grating, a student measured different standard concentrations and got the data in the second column of the table. The lab manager aligned the detector and diffraction grating and alerted the...

C‐reactive protein (CRP) is a protein found in blood plasma that is a marker of inflammation. In healthy patients, its concentration is less than 0.000976 %wt in blood plasma. However, in patients with a bacterial infection, CRP levels are typically 0.0039 – 0.0195 %wt in blood plasma. To detect CRP, a BCA assay was performed (similar to the one you did in lab), in which a given volume of protein solution was mixed with 1.000 mL of the BCA working...

An approximately 0.1 M NaOH solution is prepared by adding 2.0 g of solid NaOH to 500 mL of water. The precise concentration of the solution is determined by titrating the NaOH against weighed portions of a weak acid, pot assium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), obtained from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and certified as being 99.99% pure. The KHP samples are weighed by difference on an analytical balance. Following its standardization, the NaOH solut ion is used...

In an ornamental plant, silver-colored flowers (s) are recessive to blue-colored flowers (S), red leaves (r) are recessive to green leaves (R), and long stems (l) are recessive to short stems (L). All three genes involved are located on the same chromosome. Two true-breeding strains were crossed to produce an F1 plant. Then, this F1 plant was test-crossed to a plant with silver flowers, red leaves, and long stems, to produce the following progeny: progeny phenotype count of progeny silver...
