The main competing side reaction for an SN2 reaction is E2 reaction.

Reaction Conditions to favour SN2:

  • The compounds which are strong nucleophiles but weak bases will favour SN2 reaction. An example could be preference of Thiolate over Alkoxides for SN2 reaction.
  • Polar, aprotic solvents increase nucleophilicity of a species and thus increase the rate of SN2 reaction.
  • E2 reaction requires β -hydrogens and therefore less or no branching of the substrate promotes SN2 reaction.
