In the following reaction if all of the gases are measured at STP what is the volume of the products produced from 11.9 g of C5H6O2 and excess O2? Assume that H2O is a gas at STP.

Answer #1

The combustion(reaction in excess O2 ) reaction of C5H6O2 can be written as follows

Now applying mole concept to the problem, 1 mole of C5H6O2 reacts with oxygen to give 5 moles of CO2 and 3 moles of H2O.

Molar mass of C5H6O2=98g/mol

Moles of C5H6O2 taken= =0.1214mol

Moles of CO2 produced= =0.6071mol

Moles of H2O produced==0.3643mol

1 mole of any gas at STP( 273K, 1bar) occupies the 22.7L volume

So total volume of products formed above=

Hence the total volume of products formed is 22.0514L
