Calculate the change in enthalpy for the Mg-HCl reaction using standard enthalpies of formation. (Change in enthalpy of formation): HCl(aq) = -167.2kJ; MgCl2(aq) = -791.2 kJ

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The reaction is

Mg(s) + HCl (aq) ------> MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

change in enthalpy = total enthalpy of the product- total enthalpy of the reactant

                                   = (-792.2 + 0) - (-167.2 + 0)

                                   = -625 kJ
