between cytochrome C and complex IV |
The blocking of the electron transport between cytochrome C and complex IV is worse and dangerous. This is usually caused by cyanide since it gets tightly bound to the Fe3+ in cytochrome C. The tight binding causes inhibition of ATP production in the mitochondria since the electron transport to oxygen has been blocked. When there is no ATP production, the proton movement back into the matrix of the mitochondria is stopped and the proton concentration gradient increases. Therefore the person is deviod of energy now and he ultimately dies.
