UV and Fluorescene spectroscopy are the two techniques which have been used to differentiate the source of DOM (allochthonous vs. autochthonous) in water samples.

The UV absorbance can be related to DOM because of its chemical complexity. The adsorption coefficient at 355 nm can be used as a quantitative parameter to characterize and differentiate DOM. Further, the origins of DOM can be distinguished by measuring the ratio of the fluorescence emission intensity at 450 nm to that at 500 nm, when excited at 370 nm.
