Describe two experimental methods that could be used to determine the molar mass of a substance. It may be necessary to search for this information. Cite your sources.
To determine the molar mass of a substance
i) if the substance is volatile Victor-meyer method is used.
In this method a known mass of substance is vporised and its volume is measured at STP.
As we know at STP any gas occupies 22.4L of volume per one mole of substance , relating mass and volume the molar mass is calculated.
ii) if the substance is non- volatile , we can use any of the colligative properties
like
depression in freezing point
elevation of boiling point
measuring the lowering of vapor pressure or
osmotic pressure of solution.
