In the first part of the lab we did oxydation of Borneol to Camphor. The next lab will be for the reduction of Camphor to Isoborneol. I am having a hard time preparing the separation/extraction scheme for this. normally we have an aquaeous layer and an organic layer split on the scheme. Please provide a full separation/ extraction scheme for the reduction of camphor to Isoborneol.

Answer #1

Reduction of camphor to isoborneol is performed by using NaBH4 as the reducing agent in MeOH solvent. After the reaction, we add ice cold water to protonate the alkoxide to alcohol isoborneol. The solid thus formed is filterted off and redissolved in dichloromethane. Wash the organic layer with water and dry the organic layer over anhydrous MgSO4. filter to remove the MgSO4 as residue which is washed with addiitonal dichloromethane. The collective fltrate is evaporated to isolate isoborneol product. If some trace of camphor exists in it is separated by column chormatography. Isoborneol is more polar and sticks to the silica column whereas, camphor comes off the column first.

Hi, I did a lab on ROTATIONAL KINEMATICS and I'm having a little trouble answering the questions at the end of the lab. For this lab, we used an object attach to a parallel shaft that spins. There was a hanging mass attached to the shaft that made the object spin. We then recorded the times for two different methods. These methods were PART A). Angular Position Versus Time, and PART B). Angular Velocity versus Time. Once done, we were...

In organic lab, we did a steam distillation of the essential oil of caraway oil. In the post questions it asks for some calculation I don't understand how to get. First ---> calculate the percent of essential oil based on the mass of caraway oil used (caraway oil used was 2.038 grams) Second ----> assuming the reaction is quantitative, the amount of carvone originally in the extracted oil can be calculated. The amount of limonene in the oil can then...

My physics class is working on Ohm's law and we did a lab about series and parallel circuits. While doing the lab report I got stuck on this question below. Please help! "For the same amount voltage, when do we have more current flowing from/to the voltage source? When resistors are connected in series or when they are connected in parallel?" This is my data: Part I Voltage (V) Current (A) Resistance (Ω) R = V/I % diff. 33 0.33A...

As you saw from the lab PowerPoint slides last week, you will be doing a research study looking at ‘Aggression Priming” for your first paper. For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...

Write a Python 3 program called “parse.py” using the template for a Python program that we covered in this module. Note: Use this mod7.txt input file. Name your output file “output.txt”. Build your program using a main function and at least one other function. Give your input and output file names as command line arguments. Your program will read the input file, and will output the following information to the output file as well as printing it to the screen:...

Below is the background info for the lab assignment. The 4 blank boxes are the questions I would like answers too. The end point for the fine titration was 35.90 mL in the burette when the solution turned bright green again. And the coarse titration I got 35.36mL as the end point. 35.9 mL is exact in case you need that info. Thanks! Background In this lab, we will determine the amount of alcohol (ethanol), C2H5OH, in a commercial vodka...
