In the first part of the lab we did oxydation of Borneol to Camphor. The next lab will be for the reduction of Camphor to Isoborneol. I am having a hard time preparing the separation/extraction scheme for this. normally we have an aquaeous layer and an organic layer split on the scheme. Please provide a full separation/ extraction scheme for the reduction of camphor to Isoborneol.
Reduction of camphor to isoborneol is performed by using NaBH4 as the reducing agent in MeOH solvent. After the reaction, we add ice cold water to protonate the alkoxide to alcohol isoborneol. The solid thus formed is filterted off and redissolved in dichloromethane. Wash the organic layer with water and dry the organic layer over anhydrous MgSO4. filter to remove the MgSO4 as residue which is washed with addiitonal dichloromethane. The collective fltrate is evaporated to isolate isoborneol product. If some trace of camphor exists in it is separated by column chormatography. Isoborneol is more polar and sticks to the silica column whereas, camphor comes off the column first.
