Which substances are fragmenting most - carboxylic acids or phenols? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Carboxylic acids fragment more , and their molecular ion is not usually oberved, while phenols gie strong molecular ion peak.

RCOOH is easy to lose CO and CO2 fragements or COOH are the common fragmenttions by alpha cleaveage. We generally observe R+ , COOH+ and RCO+ peaks in the mass spectrum.

Along with this , beta cleaveage and the McLafferty rearragement are also common in aliphatic acids.

PHenols on the other hand give strong molecular ion peaks and the common fragmentations are loss of CO and CHO . If side chains are present can form hydroxytropylium ions also by rearrangements.

Stearic acid and linoleic acid are both long chain carboxylic acids with 18 carbon atoms. However, there is a vast difference in the melting points of these fatty acids. Stearic acid (18:0) melts at 70°C and linoleic acid (18:2) melts at -5°C. Explain why there is such a large difference in the melting points of these fatty acids.
