In a solution containing benzoic acid (Ka = 6.3*10^-5), propanoic acid (Ka = 1.3*10^-5), formic acid (Ka = 1.8*10^-4), and hydrazoic (Ka = 2.5*10^-5) acid buffered to pH 4.373, what percent of hydrazoic acid is protonated?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

pH = 4.373

pKa for hydrazoic acid = 4.602

pH = pKa + log [salt / acid]

4.373 = 4.602 + log [deprotonated / protonated]

[deprotonated / protonated] = 0.5902

[protonated / deprotonated] = 1.694

protonated = protonated / protonated + deprotonated

                    = [protonated] / [protonated] + [protonated ]/1.694

                     = 1 / (1 + 1/ 1.694)

                     = 0.629

percentage of protonated = 62.9 %
