Kb for ammonia (NH3 ) at 310 K is 1.85*10-5 , and Kw for water at 310 K is 2.42*10-14 . What is the pH of a 10 uM solution of ammonia at 310 K?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Kb = 1.85 x 10^-5

concentration of NH3 = 10 x 10^-6 M

NH3 + H2O   ---------------> NH4+ + OH-

10^-5                                        0          0

10^-5 - x                                   x            x

Kb = x^2 / 10^-5 - x

1.85 x 10^-5 = x^2 / 10^-5 - x

x = 7.20 x 10^-6

[OH-] = 7.20 x 10^-6 M

pOH = -log (7.20 x 10^-6 )

pOH = 5.14

pH = 8.86
