A solder batch is made by melting together 73 g of a 40:60 Pb-Sn alloy with 61 g of a 60:40 Pb-Sn alloy. Calculate the amounts of α and β phase that would be present in the overall alloy, assuming it is slowly cooled to room temperature, 25∘C.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans--

given 73 g of 40:60 pb-Sn and 61 g of 60:40 pb-sn alloy

total mass of pb= 0.4*73+0.6*51

= 65.8 g

mass of sn =  0.6*73+0.4*51

=68.2 g

wt % of sn = 68.2/68.2+65.88*100%

=50.89%

amount of = 50.89-1.5/99.8-1.5 mtotal

=0.502 mtotal

=0.502 (73+61) = 67.28g

amount of = 1-0.502 m total

= 0.498 m total

= 0.498 (134)=66.73g
