Why are orbitals often shown with shading or with two different colors, red and blue?
I will tell you very briefly. S orbital is spherical and p orbitals are dumbel shape. And these p orbitals are 3 right ??.. so in order to show the nodes and the nodal planes we need to show ising different colors.
For example, take a molecule say methane. Hybridization is sp3 but the sigma bond formation with H is sp3-s . so in order to distinguish atomic orbitals from hybrid orbitals we need colors.
I would suggest you to read Orbitals and molecular representation by Dr.Stphen Thompson. I don't have different color pens to draw. Hope u understand.
Thanks and please let me know if u have any further queries on this concept.
