Gasoline consists primarly of octane, C8H18. Calculate the mass of water, in kilograms, coming from the exhaust of a car that takes a trip of 257 miles, in a car that gets 28.2 miles/gallon. Assume complete combustion of the gasoline (octane) with excess O2.

3.97 L = 1.00 galln

density of octane = 0.756 g/mL

combustion = combustion with oxygen

Equation must be displayed as one step, not broken into parts.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) gassoline = octane

   2C8H18(l) + 25O2(g) ---> 16CO2(g) + 18H2O(g)

amount of gasoline consumed = 257/28.2 = 9.1134 gallon

   gasoline in L = 9.1134*3.97 = 36.18 L

mass of gasoline consumed = 36.18*10^3*0.756 = 27.352*10^3 g

no of mole of gasoline = 27.352/114.23 = 0.24*10^3 mol

no of mole of watervapor produced = 0.24*10^3*18/2 = 2.16*10^3 mol

mass of of watervapor produced = 2.16*10^3*18

                                = 38.8*10^3 g

                                = 38.8 kg
