For the reaction Cl 2 ( g ) + 4H 2 O( g )  2ClO 2 ( g ) + 4 H 2 ( g ), at a particular instant in time, the rate of change of H 2 ( g ) is +0.040 M/s. At this same moment, what is the rate of change of Cl 2 ( g ), what is the rate of change of H 2 O( g ), what is the rate of change of ClO 2 ( g ), and what is the rate of the reaction?

Answer #1

The reaction under consideration is

      Cl2 (g) + 4 H2O (g) = 2 ClO2 (g) + 4 H2 (g)

So, for 4 molecules of H2 generation 1 molecule of Cl2 and 4 molecules of Cl2 have to be consumed and 2 molecules of ClO2 would be generated along with.

Now we have Rate of change of [H2] is +0.040 M/s.

Hence,

Rate of change of [ClO2] is +0.020 M/s.

Rate of change of [Cl2] is -0.010 M/s.

Rate of change of [H2O] is -0.040 M/s.
