Predict which of the following has an ionic bond. Predict which of the following has an ionic bond. 1) H2Se 2)H2S 3) H2O 4) all of the above 5) none of the above

Homework Answers

Answer #1

5) none of the above

An ionic bond is the extreme case of a polar covalent bond. In an ionic bond, the bonding atoms differ so markedly in their attraction for electrons that one or more electrons are essentially transferred from one atom to the other.

If the electronegativity difference (ΔEN) is greater than 2.0, then the bond will become ionic.

electronegativity Oxygen 3.44

electronegativity of hydrogen 2.22

electronegativity of sulfur 2.58

electronegativity of selenium 2.55

No compounds will make electronegativity difference more than 2. Hence all are covalent compounds
