Me2SO complexes with Fe(III) via Fe-O bonds but with Pt(II) via Pt-S bonds--explain why.
This problem can be approached by HSAB principle ( hard soft acid base) . In this case Fe is hard species due high electronegativity , lesser size etc and Pt is soft species due to low electronegativity , large size . and we can anayse oxygen and sulfar in the same light , - oxygen being hard and sulfer being soft. so according to HSAB , soft species will tend to bind will soft species and hard species will combine with hard one.. So we can say that Fe complexes with O bocoz both of them are hard species and Pt complexes with S bocoz both of them are soft.
