Homework Answers

Answer #1

A balanced reaction of decomposition of H2O2 by KI is,

H2O2 + 2 I- ----------> O2 + 2 HI.

I.e. 1 mole of H2O2 gives 1 mole of O2.

i.e. 'V' mL of H2O2 on decomposition will produce same volume of O2.

Hence we hhave following results.

1) Solution 1 Volume of H2O2 = 5.00 mL hence Volume of O2 = 5 mL.

Rate (volume of O2/ s) = 5 mL/s.

2) Solution 2 Volume of H2O2 = 10.00 mL hence Volume of O2 = 10 mL.

Rate (volume of O2/ s) = 10 mL/s.

3) Solution 3 Volume of H2O2 = 5.00 mL hence Volume of O2 = 5 mL.

Rate (volume of O2/ s) = 5 mL/s.

Volume of KI does not affect volume of O2 formed.
