If you look at a reaction equation for an esterification reaction, you cannot tell where the oxygen comes from (acid or alcohol). Knowing the mechanism of this reaction, devise an experiment using O^18, to help prove unequivocally where the oxygen comes from.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

CH3COOH + CH3O18H------> CH3COO18 CH3 + H2O

make either O18labeled acid. Run the esterification reaction. If the O18shows up in the product then you know the oxygen from the acid is the one from the acid. if there is no O18 in the product then the oxygen is from the alcohol. alcohol. The same experiment can be done with O18 labeled alcohol. In this case if the O18 is found in the product then the oxygen is coming from the alcohol. If it is not there then the oxygen is coming from the acid.

For Reduction of Vanillin aldehyde to Vanillyl alcohol using Nabh4, Aqueous NaOH and HCl If you incorrectly add acid and do not attain a pH of 1, your yield may be lower than it should be as some of your product would not be isolated. Why won’t it be isolated? Notes: This addition of HCl causes four reactions to occur: a. it hydrolyzes the O-B bond in the intermediate and protonates the oxygen atom that was originally the oxygen atom...

7. Look at the equipment you are using in this experiment. Consider an experiment where 0.129 g sample of your sample of Al-Zn alloy is reacted with dilute HCl(aq) to displace 147 g of water from the 500 mL and collected into the 400 mL beaker. One the day of the experiment the barmetric pressure is 982 mbar and the water temperature is 23 deg C. a) V olume of displace water b) Pressure of dry hydrogen, c) Moles of...

Chemical Reactions Types and Their Equations Making Heat with Chemical Reactions Have you ever wondered how an instant heat pack works? A disposable heat pack works by a chemical reaction that combines iron in the package with oxygen from the air when the outer packaging is removed producing iron oxide. You have probably seen the product of this reaction in what is commonly called rust. The reaction releases heat, which allows the pack to reach a sufficient temperature that is...

Procedure Reaction 1: Dissolving the Copper 1. Obtain a clean, dry, glass centrifuge tube. 2. Place a piece of copper wire in a weighing paper, determine the mass of the wire and place it in the centrifuge tube. The copper wire should weigh less than 0.0200 grams. 3. In a fume hood, add seven drops of concentrated nitric acid to the reaction tube so that the copper metal dissolves completely. Describe your observations in the lab report. (Caution, Concentrated nitric...

we will be taking data in as a file. you cannot use the data values in your source file but you must read in everything into variables and use it from there. First we need to include <fstream> at the top of our file. We will need to create an input file stream to work and ifstream. ifstream is a datatype. Create a variable with the datatype being ifstream. Variable is drfine by using the member accessor operator to call...

Activity 1: Scientific Reports You may have heard the question “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” A similar question can be asked about experiments. “If a researcher performs an experiment and never publishes the result has science been performed?” Many people would say no because science is the accumulation of knowledge. If the results of an experiment are not published, knowledge is not gained. The final...
