What is the density of Xe gas at 0.00 degrees Celsius, at a pressure of 563 Torr, with volume 36.0 mL?

A). 1.58 g/L

B). 4.99 g/L

C). 2.15 g/L

D). 5.22 g/L

E). 4.34 g/L

Homework Answers

Answer #1

first calculate the moles of Xe

from that we can calculate the density

use PV = nRT

P = pressure = 563 Torr convert in to atm = 0.74 atm

V = volume = 36.0 mL convert in to liters = 0.036L

n = no of moles need to calculate

R = gas constant = 0.0821 L atm/mol-k

T = 0.0ºC = 273+0 = 273K

put all these values in the above equation

0.74 x 0.036 = n x 0.0821 x 273

n = 0.001188 moles

now moles = weight / molar mass

weight = moles x molar mass = 0.001188 mole x 131.3 g/mole = 0.156 grams

now use density = mass / volume

density = 0.156g / 0.036 L

density = 4.34 g/L
