What type of atomic orbitals of the central atom mix to form hybrid orbitals for FCN?

State the hybridization for each atom in FCN.

How many sigma bonds are in FCN? How many pi bonds?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer – W are given the molecule FCN we know the central atom is carbon. Carbon form 4 bonds and its electronic configuration is

C6 – 1s2 2s22p2

So there are 2 s orbital and 2 p taking part in the hybridization and form the bond. So s and p type of atomic orbitals of the central atom mix to form hybrid orbitals for FCN.

The central atom is C has hybridization – sp hybridization

F – There is from the sigma bond between C and F in the p orbital of F and s orbital of C, so it has also sp hybridization.

N – there are used s and p orbital for the one sigma bond and 2 pi bond, so it has also sp hybridization

In the FcN there are 2 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds.
