Does entropy increase, decrease, or stay the same in the following reactions, and why?

a) N2 + 3 H2 2NH3

b) Urea + H2O CO2 + 2 NH3

c) ADP + Pi ATP

d) Enzyme + Reactant Enzyme + Product

Answer #1

Entropy of the reaction depends on the delta n value ( change in nom of mols of product - reactants )

delta n = total mols of products - total mols of reactants

If delta n = + ve entropy increses ( less Num of molecules giving more nom of molecules upon a reaction)

-ve then entropy decreases ( more Num of molecules giving less nom of molecules upon a reaction)

1) N2 + 3 H2 ........> 2 NH3 ( all in gas phase)

Delta n = 2-4 = -2 entropy decreases

2) urea (s) + H2O ........> CO2 + 2 NH3

Delta n= 3-1 = 2 entropy increases

3) ADP + pi ..........> ATP

Delta n = 1-2 = -1 entropy decreases

4) enzyme + reactant ........> enzyme+ product,

Delta n = 0 no increase no decrease, stay the same
