Would it be possible to prepare a Grignard reagent with 3-bromopropanal in one step? Support with an explanation. If it is not possible to prepare the reagent directly, how would you be able to prepare the Grignard reagent with 3-bromopropanal?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

It is not possible to prepare Grignard reagent with 3-bromopropanal in one step. When Mg is added to prepare Grignard reagent, it shows Pincol coupling reaction with carbonyl groups and gives diols as product.

Therefore to prepare Grignard reagent first we have to protect carbonyl group. Protection is done by forming cyclic acetal by reacting aldehydic group (carbonyl) with 1,2-ethandiol in presence of HCl. After protection Mg is added to prepare desired product.
