1/ Determine five (5) chemical tests to distinguish among the following household products along with their expected results:
-Sugar
-Cornstarch
-Rolaids
-Epsom Salt
-Salt
-Salt Petre
Note- Assuming that they are all unknown white solutes
First test is solubility test: both Rolaids (CaCO3) and cornstarch are insoluble in water, remaining all are soluble.
Second test is iodine test: cornstarch can give this test, Rolaids cannot, and it can be separated.
Sugar, salt, Epsom salt and salt petre are soluble in water. They can be identified by their pH value. Each of them has a definite pH value. Depending on the pH value we can find them. (Or) you can perform flame test also. Sugar under flame turns brown and then black. Salt (NaCl), salt petre (KNO3) and Epsom salt (MgSO4.7H2O) will each have a different color flame. Depending on the color we can find them. Salt (NaCl) will give yellow flame. Salt petre (KNO3) will give violet flame and Epsom salt (MgSO4.7H2O) will give white color.
