Question

how can solubiity of organic base be decreased in ether and increased in water

how can solubiity of organic base be decreased in ether and increased in water

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer – We know the solubility is depending upon the solute-solute, solute solvent and solvent-solvent intermolecular forces. We know the rule like dissolve like, means polar solute dissolve in the polar solvent and nonpolar solute dissolve in the nonpolar solvent.

We know organic base is polar in nature, so it is solubility increase in the polar solvent than nonpolar. Water is polar solvent so the solubility of organic base increase in the water and the ether is nonpolar solvent so the solubility of organic base decrease in the ether.

Suppose you have discovered a new organic molecule and it is somewhat soluble in water even though it is more soluble in dichloromethane or ether solvents. If you do a single extraction, you get only 60% of your material to transfer from the water to the organic layer. How many washes would it take to extract over 90% of your organic material from the water layer. Explain.
