What effect does dilution of the buffer(NH3/NH4Cl) have on the initial pH? On the pH at the endpoint? On the volume of HCl required to reach the endpoint?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

dilution of NH3/NH4

ratio is not affected whne diluting, so high NH3 and high NH4 are the same as low NH3 and NH4

the only thing that changes are the amount of acids/bases needed to change the pH of solution.

the initial pH is always relevent to the euqation

pOH = pKb + log(NH4+/NH3)

the pH at the endpoint will be lower for those dilute solutions (more volume)

and will be higher for those concnetrated

the volume of Hcl is high required if the species are high in concnetration
