An ion of this element has a net 2+ charge and has 10 electrons in the 3d sub-shell. There are no electrons in the 4s sub-shell and no electrons in the 4p sub-shell. Which element is this?

Select one:

a. Zinc

b. Gallium

c. Copper

d. Cadmium

Homework Answers

Answer #1

It is much better if we write electron configuraito of ech:

30 Zn zinc : [Ar] 3d10 4s2

31 Ga gallium : [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p1

29 Cu copper : [Ar] 3d10 4s1

48 Cd cadmium : [Kr] 4d10 5s2

Note : Cadmium can't be, since 4s sub shell is all filled up, ignore it:

If +2 charged:

30 Zn zinc : [Ar] 3d10 4s2

31 Ga gallium : [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p1

29 Cu copper : [Ar] 3d10 4s1

all are +10 in 3dsubshell ... since it charges +2 , ignore Ga, since it charges +3

29 Cu copper : [Ar] 3d10 4s1

30 Zn zinc : [Ar] 3d10 4s2

if no 4 s ---> this must be Zinc, since Copper will charge as [Ar] 3d8 4s1
