A student mixes 58.5 g of NaCl and 80.0 g of NaOH into a 10.00L volumetric flask and fills to the mark with water. What is the molarity of Na+ ions in solution?
Since NaCl is a ssalt and NaOH is a strong base, they both will compltely dissociate into their respective ions in the aqueous solution.
Thus,
NaCl(s) ------> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
NaOH(aq) ------> Na+(aq) + OH-(aq)
Molar mass of NaCl = 58.5 g/mole
THus, moles of NaCl in 58.5 g of it = mass/molar mass = 1
Thus, moles of Na+ = moles of NaCl = 1
Molar mass of NaOH = 40 g/mole
Thus, moles of NaOH in 80 g of it = mass/molar mass = 2
moles of Na+ = moles of NaOH = 2
Thus, total moles of Na+ = 3
Total volume of solution = 10 litres
Thus, molarity of Na+ solution = moles/volume of solution in litres = 3/10 = 0.3 M
